Rotary Club meetings
The Rotary Club of Malakoff, chartered March 29, 1939 meets noon each Tuesday at the Flagg House, located at 207 E. Main Street. The group serves the people of the Malakoff area, students and faculty at Malakoff ISD, and the students at Cross Roads High School. “A small but powerful group of motivated people in service to their communities.” For information, contact Jeanie Seely at 903-489-2266.

Gospel Explosion
Johnson Chapel AME Church will be hosting the Annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Gospel Explosion starting at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 14.
Organizers are asking for area choirs, soloists, praise teams, etc., to come help celebrate the legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Democrats to meet
There will be a joint meeting of the Henderson County Democratic Women and the Henderson County Democratic Club on Jan. 14, beginning at 9:30 a.m., at St. Stephens Church, off SH 175 E, 2101 E. College Street, Athens. Breakfast will be served, and donations will be gratefully accepted. There will be a short program regarding the status of the Dream Act, presented by students from Brownsboro High School and Joe Guerra of Navarro College, Precinct Chair for Precinct 3B. Marsha Head will introduce Democratic candidates for office in Henderson County, and an open forum will follow.

Fly fishing classes
Expert fly-fisher Bob Cappallo of Corsicana will teach fly fishing for beginners at the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center in Athens Jan. 14 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The class is open to adults 18 and older. No fly fishing experience is required. Equipment will be provided, but students may bring their own. The $50 fee for the class includes entrance to TFFC for the day of the class, lunch and a season pass to TFFC so students can return for more fishing as often as they like.
Instruction will focus on equipment selection, knot tying, casting and fishing for rainbow trout in TFFC’s 1.5-acre casting pond. Catch-and-release fishing is free, but anglers may pay $5 for the opportunity to catch and keep up to five fish.
Cappallo is a member of the Brazos Valley Fly Fishers and lives on Richland Chambers Reservoir. He fly-fishes for trout in New Mexico and redfish and tarpon on the Texas coast. Cappallo also builds handmade fly rods and ties flies.
Reservations are required, and the class is limited to 20 persons. Registration deadline is Jan. 13. Checks should be made payable to “Friends of TFFC.” For more information or to register for the class, call Craig Brooks at (903) 670-2222.

MLK Candlelight Vigil
The annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Candlelight Vigil will be held 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 16, at New Hope Corinth CME Church in Malakoff. The speaker will be the Rev. Marcus Jones of Mt. Providence Baptist Church of Athens. Everyone is invited.

Rootseekers meeting
The next meeting of the Rootseekers Genealogy Society will be on Jan. 16, 2012 at the Tri-County Library in downtown Mabank at 7 p,m. Meeting is open to the public. Come join for some fellowship.

CCL Tea Party meeting
The Jan. 17 meeting of the Cedar Creek Lake Tea Party will feature a presentation called Mythbusting the Free Market. All attendees are encouraged to ask any questions about the free market they’ve always wanted answered. The meeting will take place at the Dairy Queen in Seven Points at 7 p.m.

60 Feet ministry
First Baptist Church of Malakoff will be hosting 60 Feet, a ministry that helps the imprisoned children of Uganda 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 18. The group will be sharing testimonies, and showing a film titled “Bereaved.” This is a ministry that several of the FBC ladies who went on the mission trip to Uganda were able to be part of this past summer. DAR meeting
The next meeting of the Sarah Maples Chapter of DAR will be on Jan. 18 at the Tri-County Library in downtown Mabank at 1 p.m. This is the annual business meeting. Hostesses are Carol Dwinnell, Suzanne Fife, Liz Pierce and Carolyn Bostian.

The Old Paths
in concert
First Baptist Church of Malakoff will be hosting the Southern Gospel group The Old Paths in concert, 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20. Admission is free and there will be a love offering taken.

Square dances
The Log Cabin Round and Square Dance Club meets 8-10 p.m. the first and third Saturdays each month at the Promenade Hall located at 1210 North Tool Drive (SH 274). Beginner series lessons will begin January 2012. Country-western and square dancers are invited to the New Year’s Eve dance from 8-10 p.m. Country-western SWAGS dance will be Jan. 22. Mason’s Annual
Chili Luncheon
The Malakoff Masonic Lodge will hold its Annual Chili Luncheon from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28. Lunch will be homemade chili, ice tea and coffee. Cost is $5. The lodge is located at 110 Jackson St., across from the elementary school.

Tri-County Soccer

Tri-County Soccer Association will be holding signups at McDonalds in Gun Barrel City from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 2, and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4. Players must be 4 years old prior to Jan. 1. Fee is $60 for new players and $40 for returning players not transferring teams. New coaches and referees are needed as well. Murchison pancake breakfast
Murchison Fire Department will be having a Pancake Breakfast fundraiser on Jan. 28 from 7-10 a.m. Each plate will be by donation with no set prices. This event will be located at Murchison FD next to Ribmasters on FM 773 right off of Highway 31.

Friends of the
Animals production
Prepare yourself for a fun afternoon of laughs with “Sylvia” on Sunday, Jan. 29 at 2 p.m. at the Mabank Middle School. This two-act comedy, originally produced on Broadway, about a dog and her family will benefit Friends of the Animals Spay-Neuter Clinic, a non-profit charity located at Cedar Creek Lake and Spay-Neuter Support Services of East Texas in Tyler. Tickets are just $10 and are available at Bluebonnet Emporium in Gun Barrel City seven days a week, at the spay/neuter clinic in Gun Barrel City on Tuesdays or by calling 903-887-7387.

De Junque de Trunk Garage Sale is now accepting vendor applications. Booth spaces are approximately 10′ x 10′ and rent for $30 each. Scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 4 from 8 am to 2 pm at the Cain Center, 915 S. Palestine, Athens. Vendors may begin setting up on Friday. No flea market or retail sales permitted.
