Rotary Club meetings
The Rotary Club of Malakoff, chartered March 29, 1939 meets noon each Tuesday at the Flagg House, located at 207 E. Main Street. The group serves the people of the Malakoff area, students and faculty at Malakoff ISD, and the students at Cross Roads High School. “A small but powerful group of motivated people in service to their communities.” For information, contact Jeanie Seely at 903-489-2266.
The VFW Post 4133 will host a Turkey Shoot from 1-5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 7.
Rules and safety requirements are available at the VFW; 12-16-20 gauge shotguns only. There will be meat prizes and 50/50 cash rounds. All proceeds go to support the VFW. The kitchen will be open. Call 903-778-2677 for more information.
Singing Cadets in concert
On Monday, Jan. 9, The Texas A&M Singing Cadets will perform at the First United Methodist Church in Athens.
Known as the “Voice of Aggieland,” The Singing Cadets is an all-male chorus that performs approximately 60 concerts each year throughout Texas, the United States, and even overseas.
The upcoming concert is presented at no charge by The Henderson County A&M Mothers’ Club. This club provides academic scholarships for local Texas A&M students. The concert will be held at 7 p.m. on Jan. 9 at the Athens First United Methodist Church that is located at 225 Lovers Lane.

Republican Women meeting

Fly fishing classes
Expert fly-fisher Bob Cappallo of Corsicana will teach fly fishing for beginners at the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center in Athens Jan. 14 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The class is open to adults 18 and older. No fly fishing experience is required. Equipment will be provided, but students may bring their own. The $50 fee for the class includes entrance to TFFC for the day of the class, lunch and a season pass to TFFC so students can return for more fishing as often as they like.
Instruction will focus on equipment selection, knot tying, casting and fishing for rainbow trout in TFFC’s 1.5-acre casting pond. Catch-and-release fishing is free, but anglers may pay $5 for the opportunity to catch and keep up to five fish.
Reservations are required, and the class is limited to 20 persons. Registration deadline is Jan. 13. Checks should be made payable to “Friends of TFFC.” For more information or to register for the class, call Craig Brooks at 903-670-2222.
MLK Candlelight Vigil
The annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Candlelight Vigil will be held 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 16, at New Hope Corinth CME Church in Malakoff. The speaker will be the Rev. Marcus Jones of Mt. Providence Baptist Church of Athens. Everyone is invited.
The Log Cabin Round and Square Dance Club meets 8-10 p.m. the first and third Saturdays each month at the Promenade Hall located at 1210 North Tool Drive (SH 274). Beginner series lessons will begin January 2012. Country-western SWAGS dance will be Jan. 22. Everyone is invited to all the dances; no charge for observers. For more information, call 903-340-9672.
Mason’s Annual Chili Luncheon
The Malakoff Masonic Lodge will hold its Annual Chili Luncheon from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28. Lunch will be homemade chili, ice tea and coffee. Cost is $5. The lodge is located at 110 Jackson St., across from the elementary school.
Flyfish Texas in Athens
Expert fly-fishers and those wanting to learn the sport will gather at the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center (TFFC) in Athens March 10 for a day of teaching, learning and fishing.
Instruction in all aspects of fly-fishing from fly-tying to casting to equipment selection to choosing a destination will be provided by expert fly-fishers. All necessary equipment will be provided, and all activities are free with paid admission to TFFC.
