Rotary Club meetings
The Rotary Club of Malakoff, chartered March 29, 1939 meets noon each Tuesday at the Flagg House, located at 207 E. Main Street. The group serves the people of the Malakoff area, students and faculty at Malakoff ISD, and the students at Cross Roads High School. “A small but powerful group of motivated people in service to their communities.” For information, contact Jeanie Seely at 903-489-2266.
Operation Christmas Child
Operation Christmas Child – the world’s largest Christmas project of its kind – is kicking off National Collection Week, Nov. 14 – 21. OCC will collect millions of shoebox gifts – filled with toys, school supplies and hygiene items – for the neediest children around the world. The Athens Collection Center located at 1700 S. Palestine will be open Tuesday through Sunday from 3-6 p.m. daily. On Monday, Nov. 21, the Center will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This will be the last day for collections in Athens.

Hot soup from St. Vincent
Hot chicken soup, long known to cure what ails you, will be offered free to those who need a hot meal. On Friday, Nov. 18, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and again from 5-7 p.m., at St. Jude Catholic Church in Gun Barrel City, volunteers for the St. Vincent de Paul Society will be serving hot soup in the parish hall. Coffee, iced tea and dessert will also be available. So come and get it while it lasts. Again, there is no charge. You don’t need to belong to this or any other church. Everyone is welcome. No one will be asked any personal questions or asked to join a church.

Rainbow Girls breakfast
The Gun Barrel City 369 Rainbow Girls Masonic Youth are having a Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser on Saturday, Nov. 19, 7:30-10 a.m. at Cedar Creek Lake Masonic Lodge, 402 Legendary Lane in Gun Barrel City. Cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children 12 and under.
The next meeting of the Rootseekers Genealogical Society will be held Nov. 21 at the Tri-County Library at 7 p.m. The speaker will be Charles Finsley and his topic will be Hannah’s letters. The meetings are open to the public and organizers look forward to seeing new faces. Anyone wishing to learn more about researching their ancestors will be welcome.
American Legion dinner
The American Legion Auxiliary is hosting a Hot Dog Bar – Fresh roasted “dawgs” with all the fixin’s Friday, Nov. 25, 5-7 p.m. Proceeds will be used to send a local junior girl to Girls’ State – summer 2012. Cost is $4.
Johnson Chapel Women’s Day
Johnson Chapel AME Church will host its annual Women’s Day 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 27. The theme will be “Women God can use for such a time as this” – Esther 4:14. The guest speaker is the Rev. Thelma Lloyd of God Holy Church of Christ in Dallas. Everyone is invited. Organizers are asking everyone to wear something brown.
Festival of Trees
Trees decorated by Non-Profit Agencies in Henderson County will be displayed in the Foyer of the Cain Center from Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 24, through Friday, Dec. 2. Churches, school booster clubs, and scout troops are all invited to participate.
The public will be invited to view the trees and will have an opportunity to vote for their favorites. Each tree will be available for silent auction bidding. The proceeds from the silent auction will benefit the agency that decorated the tree.
A reception for the agencies and successful bidders will be held on Friday, December 2nd at 5:30 p.m. in Room B of the Cain Center.

PSUMC Fellowship Night
The Payne Springs United Methodist Church monthly Fellowship Night will be, Wednesday, Dec. 7, with a Covered Dish Dinner at 6:30 p.m. Organizers are pleased to bring back the “Singing Fireman” singing traditional favorite Christmas Songs.
