The Malakoff Tigers (6-1, 2-0) are set to take on the Teague Lions (4-3, 1-1) Friday night at Tiger Stadium starting at 7:30 p.m. The game has huge implications in the District 11-2A playoff picture, and a win for Malakoff would practically ensure a third-straight postseason appearance for Coach Jamie Driskell’s Tigers.
Another playoff appearance would also give these Tigers a place in Malakoff history, because no other school football team has gone to the playoffs three consecutive seasons. According to Malakoff sports historian Benny Rogers, the Tigers had back-to-back playoff appearances in 1939-40, 1998-99, and 2005-06, but all three times, the Tigers fell short in year three.
To support the team, school officials and the Malakoff Athletic Booster Club are calling for a Whiteout and asking all fans to wear white to the game. The Booster Club will be selling low-cost white t-shirts at the gate, and organizers say the “M” in the middle of the football field is being painted white for this game.
The temperatures Friday night are expected to be in the upper 50s, so fans are being asked to prepare. It won’t help much to wear a white shirt and then cover it up with a jacket … unless the jacket is white, of course.
